Specific License Types |

What businesses need to know about catering alcohol across jurisdictions in Maryland

Maryland law created a statewide caterer’s license for businesses that serve alcohol at events across different jurisdictions.

This license is required for certain catering activities and allows businesses to operate beyond their local licensing area.

This page explains who needs the license, what types are available, and how to apply.

What you need to know

  • A statewide caterer’s license is required for catering alcohol across jurisdictions
  • Retail licensees working only within their home jurisdiction may not need it
  • Two types of licenses are available (general and limited)
  • Applications should be submitted before the deadline to avoid delays

Who This Applies To

This guidance applies to:

  • Businesses that serve alcohol at catered events
  • Retail license holders operating outside their home jurisdiction
  • Entities providing alcohol service at events across Maryland

Who Must Have a Statewide Caterer’s License

You must obtain a statewide caterer’s license if you:

  • Cater events where alcohol is served outside your licensed jurisdiction
  • Provide alcohol service across multiple jurisdictions in Maryland

This requirement applies to both existing licensees and new applicants.

Who Does NOT Need This License

You may not need a statewide caterer’s license if you:

  • Only cater within your home jurisdiction
  • Comply with your local Board of License Commissioners’ requirements

Types of Caterer’s Licenses

There are two types of statewide licenses:

General License

  • Valid throughout the entire state of Maryland

Limited License

License Fees

Fees vary based on:

  • License type (general or limited)
  • Population of the jurisdictions (for limited licenses)

Typical range:

Businesses that already pay local catering fees may receive a credit.

Important Dates

  • Law effective: October 1, 1998

Submitting early helps ensure processing is complete before the effective date.
