Understand required labels and how to stay compliant

Maryland requires all cigarette vending machines to display specific identification and warning labels. This page explains what labels are required, how to apply them, and what happens if machines are not properly labeled.

What you need to know

  • Each machine must display an identification label
  • Each machine must display an age warning label
  • Old labels must be removed and replaced
  • Non-compliance may result in machines being sealed or license action

Who This Applies To

  • Cigarette vending machine operators
  • Licensees who sell cigarettes through vending machines

Requirements / Process / Rules

Each vending machine must display:

  • An identification label with the licensee’s name, address, and phone number
  • An official age warning label provided by the Comptroller

Labels must be:

  • Affixed to each machine
  • Permanent
  • Clearly visible

What Changed

  • A revised age warning label has been issued
  • All old labels are now obsolete and must be replaced

What Is Now Allowed / Not Allowed

  • Allowed
  • Using the updated warning labels provided by the Comptroller
  • Providing your own identification label with required details
  • Not allowed
  • Using outdated or obsolete labels
  • Operating machines without required labels

Effective Date

August 1, 1999

  • You must update all vending machines with new labels
  • You must ensure labels are clear and permanently attached
  • You risk enforcement action if machines are not compliant

  • Label supplies may be provided based on your license information
  • Additional labels are available upon request
  • All machines must be reviewed for compliance
